2025 Grand National Weights Allocation Table

2025 Grand National Top Weights and Key Horses

Last year's Grand National winner, I Am Maximus, has been allocated top weight for the 2025 race at Aintree on April 5, carrying 11st 12lb. Trained by Willie Mullins and owned by JP McManus, I Am Maximus won by 7.5 lengths in 2024, ahead of runner-up Delta Work, with Minella Indo third and Galvin fourth.

Mullins, who also won the National with Hedgehunter in 2005, acknowledged the challenge of winning again with top weight, noting no top-weight horse has won since Red Rum in 1974. “It’s tough, but we expected it,” Mullins said.

Royale Pagaille is second with 11st 9lb, followed by L'Homme Presse, Grangeclare West, Nick Rockett, and Envoi Allen, all on 11st 8lb. Despite the weight, I Am Maximus is joint favourite with Inothewayurthinkin (11st 5lb). Delta Work is on 11st 2lb, Minella Indo a pound higher, and Galvin on 10st 13lb.

A field size maximum of the 34 top-rated horses will take their places at the start line for the biggest and toughest single National Hunt jumping spectacle in the world.

All the weights for the 87 entries for the Grand National at Aintree on April 5 are as follows below. ⯆

Panda Boy (16/1) looks to me like a horse who could arguably run forever. When the 3m5f of the Irish National is not far enough for you, I don't think the 4m2f at Aintree will be a problem. What else is there?

Trainer Martin Brassil doesn't hit and hope at the National. His horses usually run well here. 11/1 shot Numbersixvalverde won it in 2006.

If Panda Boy meets no trouble, he might just win the big one.

Carefully Selected (66/1) is a lightly raced, Willie Mullins trained outsider, who would prefer the conditions a bit softer than they are forecast to be, but it's been raining pretty much all day, so who knows? If it keeps raining tonight, the horse will shorten in price come the start of the race.

I doubt the extra mile of the National will be a problem, the horse has won 7 of his 13 races to date over the jumps on sticky going up to 3miles.

66's looks big to me.

50/1 Two For Gold For The National (2022)

Π Going: Good To Soft (good in places)

Two For Gold (50/1) is a class 1 performer, has won on ground ranging all the way from good, soft and to heavy and has won over the jumps from 2 to 3 miles. Can jump, has pace, has stamina, and at 50's is overpriced imo.

If the extra mile of the National isn't a problem, if he doesn't fall, he will be quickening round the elbow and up the run in and could surprise them all.

Good luck with your bets.

Grand National (Saturday 9th April 2022)

5:15 Aintree
50/1 Two For Gold. (Unplaced 33/1) Wore hood to post, led, hit 1st, headed 3rd, chased leader, led again 17th until 25th (Valentines), weakened quickly, tailed off and pulled up before 2 out, PU.

14/1 Kimberlite Candy For The National (2021)

Π Going: Good To Soft (good in places)

Kimberlite Candy was my fancy for last years Covid cancelled National. At 14's, it's not worth looking anywhere else for me. Trainer Tom Lacey has been quoted as saying Kimberlite is in rude health at home, which is handy, because the lack of anything remotely nearing a recent run would usually put me off betting.

Good luck with your bets.

Grand National (Saturday 10th April 2021)

5:15 Aintree
14/1 Kimberlite Candy. (Unplaced 20/1) held up in mid-division, hampered 4th and 20th, struggling 21st, behind 26th, pulled up before 29th (2 out), PU.

16/1 Joe Farrell For The National (2019)

Π Going: Good To Soft

10yr old Joe Farrell (16/1) has already won the Scottish National at Ayr carrying 10-6, and can do the double by lifting the Aintree Grand National off of the bottom weight of 10-2. If he doesn't fall or get brought down, he's a stayer and he'll be there at the last, with a good shout of outrunning anything carrying more.

Good luck with your bets.

Grand National (Saturday 6th April 2019)

5:15 Aintree
16/1 Joe Farrell. (Unplaced 14/1) Mid-division, pushed along 4 out, never able to challenge, weakened and pulled up before 2 out, PU.

22/1 Ucello Conte For The National (2018)

Π Going: Heavy (soft in places)

The lightly raced 10yr old Ucello Conte (22/1) will go on the ground, jumps well and will get the distance. This French import should be the favourite in my book, we shall see.

Good luck with your bets.

Grand National (Saturday 14th April 2018)

5:15 Aintree
22/1 Ucello Conte. (Unplaced 16/1) Prominent on inside, left in lead 6th, (bechers), headed 19th, tracked leader, blundered 23rd (2nd canal turn), lost place but in touch when blundered and unseated rider 4 out, UR.

14/1 The Last Samurai For The National (2017)

The AW season ends as far as I'm concerned the first day of summer, ie last saturday. Since then I've had nothing but 2nd's, many of whom have looked like winning, only to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, so I'm off on holiday for a week. Shoulda went last week to be honest.

I will return next saturday, which is National day. Weather forecast for the week is good, so I will be backing The Last Samurai (14/1) to avenge last years 2nd place, heartbreak up the run in beating by 33/1 shot Rule The World.

Good luck with your National bets, you're gonna need it haha.

Grand National (Saturday 8th April 2017)

Sir Des Champs For The National (2016)

live racing commentariesSir Des Champs was 20's yesterday when I took the price with Ruby Walsh aboard, but he's got a fractured wrist. Up steps Nina Carberry to be the first female winner of the National (and I thought I saw some 33's available for a few minutes after the news broke last night).

What a story, couldn't have wrote it better myself!

Grand National (sat april 9, 2016)

Joncol For The National

live racing commentariesJoncol undoubtedly has all it takes to win a big race like the National, the question is will he win?

I'll take my chances at 50/1, the big horse can put his injuries behind him and jump round safely, picking them off one by one.

Granf National (sat april 6, 2013)
50/1 Joncol. (Unplaced 50/1) blundered 2nd, always behind, lost touch and pulled up after 18th, PU.

Stake: £1.00 Win

Total: - £1.00

Joncol For The National News:
Joncol has the class but whether he gets the John Smith’s Grand National trip is unknown, says trainer Paul Nolan

Power switched on for Joncol - Robbie Power is hoping history repeats itself when he partners Paul Nolan's giant Joncol in the John Smith's Grand National at Aintree on Saturday.

My 2012 Grand National Bet - Vic Venturi

I backed Vic Venturi a few days ago at a 100/1 with Billhills. I was hoping for a bit more rain, but the going's still officially good to soft, so I think Vic Venturi might be swinging coming up to the last with no weight on his back compared to previous attempts to win the Grand National.

live racing commentaries2011 Grand National Bet

Golden Kite (tote each way) 66/1 and bigger.
(i'll be taking my chances each way with the tote betting pool)

100/1 + on the exchanges, 80's online at Bet365 and Victor Chandler's (vc are going each way the first 6 home). 66's on the highstreet at Coral's.

Can It Win The National Though?
Irish raider Golden Kite has it on just to get round the Aintree 4 mile 4 furlongs. So do they all. Golden Kite though can creep along in mid division at bottom weight and if still there with a circuit to go, won't be a 100/1 in running for long. Ran very well 2 races ago. Jogged around last time out. Plugs on well over the shorter 3miles. Could be quick in the finish over longer.

We shall see.

2010 Grand National - Joe Lively - 100/1+

live racing commentariesI'm on Colin Tizzard's 11yr old Joe Lively. Backable @ 100/1 at Bet365 and Coral, 120's on the exchanges - which is surprisingly short by the way, in comparison to the current projected Betfair s.p that is. Can't drift any more can it, surely?

A big outsider because he's too high in the weights, and so on, I know all these things.

Just watch out for Joe Lively. He'll be up there all the way around, will jump well, and will stay.

Well that's the plan..

You can watch the 2010 Grand National live on BBC1 with the associated build up etc starting at 2.30pm. The race is scheduled to start at 4.15pm gmt.

If you are abroad and cannot get pictures, you can listen to the grand national live on various racing commentary stations on your pc.
