In February 1839, Lottery became the first winner of the Grand Liverpool Steeplechase, the race that would become known as the Grand National. Horses had to jump a stone wall, cross a stretch of ploughed land and finish over two hurdles.

Red Rum (3 May 1965 – 18 October 1995) was an Irish champion Thoroughbred steeplechaser. He achieved an unmatched historic treble when he won the Grand National in 1973, 1974 and 1977 for trainer Ginger McCain, and also came second in the two intervening years, 1975 and 1976.

1993 Void Race - The Year the Grand National Wasn't Quite So Grand

The Grand National is one of the most iconic events in British sporting histroy, with over 170 years of tradtion behind it. But every so often, something happens that disrupts the usual flow of things — something so unusal that it feels as though the race itself never really happend. One such year was 1993, when the Grand National was declared void, marking a rare and unforgetable moment in the races history.

Imagine the sceene: It’s a crisp April day, and around 300 million people worldwide are glued to their screens, eagerly awaiting one of the most thrilling races of the year. An estimated £75 million has been placed in bets, and the stands at Aintree are packed with spectators. The atmoshpere is electric, filled with anticipation, but things quickly take a turn.

Before the race even begins, theres confusion. Anti-race protestors are seen at the first fence, causing a bit of disruption and making everyone anxious. But what follows would prove to be far worse than anyone could have anticipated.

The race is set off with a false start, which is quickly followed by another. However, this time, the recall flag—an official signal to stop the race—is not waved. This siple oversight leads to a colossal blunder. Only nine of the 39 jockeys realize that the race should not have started, while the rest charge ahead, unaware of the error.

As the riders race around the track, the mistakes continue to pile up. Eleven riders manage to finish the first circuit before realizing the mistake, at which point they pull up in confusion. But seven riders, undeterred and perhaps a little too focused, continue the race, igoring not only the crowds shouts but also the frantic waving of flags from the officials trying to stop them.

It’s a chaotic scene, and by the time the dust settles, the Jockey Club make the decision to declare the race void. It’s a rare moment in the Grand National’s history, one that no one who was there—either in person or watching at home—will ever forget.

The 1993 Grand National didn’t end the way anyone had expected, but in its own strange way, it became part of the races lore. A reminder that sometimes, even in the midst of tradition and anticipation, things can go terribly wrong.

1993 Void National continued: Doubts over the competence of the recall man, Ken Evans, were quickly refuted.

Recordings of the start of the race that was not, showed that Keith Brown, the starter, raised the red flag which was to give Ken Evans the signal that a false start had been declared, but crucially, Mr Brown did not unfurl it, making it almost impossible to see it had been raised.

Ironically, the horses which completed the course did so in the second fastest time in Grand National history.
