How Is Real Poker Played? The One You See On The Tele?

Heres a quick rundown of how to play Texas Hold'em, the version you typically see on TV, especially in online poker games.

๐Ÿ‚ก The Basics:
Players: Typically 2-10 players at a table.
Goal: Make the best fivecard hand possible using your two personal cards (called "hole cards") and the five community cards dealt in the center of the table.

๐Ÿ‚ข How the Game Is Played:
The Deal
# Blinds: The game starts with two players posting forced bets called the "small blind" and "big blind" to get the action going.
# Hole Cards: Each player is dealt two private cards (the "hole cards").

๐Ÿ‚ฃ The Betting Rounds
There are four betting rounds in Texas Holdโ€™em:

# Pre-flop: After the hole cards are dealt, the first betting round begins, starting with the player to the left of the big blind.
## The Flop: Three community cards are dealt face-up in the center of the table. These cards are shared by all players. A new round of betting follows.
### The Turn: A fourth community card is dealt face-up. Anther round of betting hapens.
#### The River: The fifth and final community card is dealt face-up. The final round of betting takes place.

๐Ÿ‚ซ Betting Actions
During each round, players can:

# Check: If no one has bet, you can check, meaning you dont bet but remain in the game.
## Bet: You can place a wager.
### Call: Match the previous bet to stay in the round.
#### Raise: Increase the previous bet.
##### Fold: Drop out of the hand and forfeit your cards.

๐Ÿ‚ฌ The Showdown
If there are two or more players left after the final round of betting, thereโ€™s a shwdown. Players reveal their hole cards, and the best five-card hand wins.

๐Ÿ‚ญ Hand Rankings (From Best to Worst)
>> Royal Flush: A, K, Q, J, 10 (all same suit)
>> Straight Flush: Five consecutive cards of the same suit
>> Four of a Kind: Four carfs of the same rank
>> Full House: Three of a kind + a pair
>> Flush: Five cards of the same suit (not in sequeence)
>> Straight: Five consecutive cards (not all the same suit)
>> Three of a Kind: Three cards of the same rank
>> Two Pair: Two pairs of cards of the same rank
>> One Pair: Two cards of the same rank
>> High Card: If no one has any of the above, the highest card wins.

๐Ÿ‚ต Important Things to Remember:
1) Community Cards: These are shared by everyone and form the basis of everyones hand. Combuining them with your hole cards, you make your best five-card combination.

2) Bluffing: A big part of the game is trying to trick your opponents into thinking you have a better (or worse) hand than you actually do.

3) Position Matters: Players who act later in the betting rounds (closer to the "button") have more information since they can see what otjers do first.

๐Ÿ‚ถ Strategy Basics
# Start with good hands: Not every hand is worth playying. Playy strong hole cards (like high pairs or face cards) in early positions, and take more risks in later positions.

## Observe others: Look for patterns in your opponents betting. Are they aggresive? Do they fold often? This can give you clues about their hand strength.

๐Ÿ‚ญ Stud Hi-Lo
A split-pot game where the pot is divided between the highest hand and the lowest hand (using the "Ace to 5" lowball rule, where hands like A-2-3-4-5 are the best low).

๐Ÿ‚ฎ 5-Card Omaha
A variation of Omaha where players are dealt five hole cards instead of four, and they still must use two hole cards and three community cards to make their best hand.

These are just a few examples of the many different poker typess. Many of these games also have regional variations or house rules, which can lead to unique twists in game play.

Poker Variations Of The Game (A to Z)

Ace-to-Five Lowball
Ace-to-Five Lowball is a draw poker game where players aim to make the lowest possible hand. The best hand is 5-4-3-2-A, and aces are always low. Straights and flushes donโ€™t count against the hand, making it easier to make a strong low hand.

Badugi
Badugi is a lowball game played with four cards, where the objective is to form the lowest hand with no pairs, using cards of different suits. A Badugi hand consists of four different suits and ranks, and the best hand is A-2-3-4, with no duplicates or suits.

Bankroll Poker
Bankroll Poker is a tournament variation where players begin with different amounts of chips based on their real-world poker bankroll. The goal is to use strategy and manage your chips effectively, as you aim to win against opponents with varying amounts of initial capital.

Chinese Poker
Chinese Poker is a game where each player is dealt 13 cards and must arrange them into three hands: two 5-card hands and one 3-card hand. The hands are compared, and points are awarded based on how the hands perform against opponents' hands.

Crazy Pineapple
Crazy Pineapple is a variation of Texas Hold'em where players are dealt three hole cards instead of two. After the flop, players must discard one card. The remaining two cards combine with community cards to make the best hand, adding more excitement and strategy.

Deuce-to-Seven Lowball
Deuce-to-Seven Lowball is a draw poker game where the goal is to make the lowest hand possible, with 2-3-4-5-7 being the best hand. Aces are high, and straights or flushes count against the hand, making this a challenging and tactical variant.

Five-Card Draw
Five-Card Draw is one of the simplest forms of poker. Each player is dealt five cards, and after a round of betting, they can discard up to three cards and draw new ones in hopes of improving their hand. The best five-card hand wins.

Five-Card Stud
In Five-Card Stud, each player is dealt five cards, with some cards face-up and others face-down. Betting occurs after each card is revealed. This game requires strategic thinking based on the cards visible to opponents and the hand you are building.

HORSE
HORSE is a mixed poker game that rotates through five variants: Hold'em, Omaha Hi-Lo, Razz, Seven-Card Stud, and Seven-Card Stud Hi-Lo. This rotation of games challenges players to be well-versed in multiple formats, requiring different strategies for each variant.

Omaha
Omaha is a community card game similar to Texas Hold'em, but players are dealt four hole cards instead of two. To make the best five-card hand, players must use exactly two of their hole cards and three community cards. The game is often played in a pot-limit format.

Omaha Hi-Lo
Omaha Hi-Lo is a split-pot variant of Omaha where half the pot is awarded to the best high hand, and the other half goes to the best low hand, if one exists. The low hand must qualify as 8 or lower, with no pairs or higher cards.

Pineapple
Pineapple is similar to Texas Hold'em but with a twist. Players are dealt three hole cards, and after the flop, they must discard one. The game provides more action due to the extra card and added complexity when deciding which card to discard.

Seven-Card Stud
Seven-Card Stud is a classic poker game where each player is dealt seven cards, three face-down and four face-up. There are five betting rounds, and the goal is to make the best possible five-card hand from the seven cards. No community cards are used.

Seven-Card Stud Hi-Lo
Seven-Card Stud Hi-Lo is a split-pot variant where half the pot is awarded to the best high hand, and the other half to the best low hand. The low hand must have five cards of 8 or lower, and the highest hand follows standard poker rankings.

Triple Draw Lowball
Triple Draw Lowball is a variant of lowball poker where players aim for the lowest hand. Players are dealt five cards and can draw up to three times, discarding unwanted cards each time. The goal is to form the best possible low hand using three draws.

Texas Hold'em
Texas Hold'em is the most popular variant of poker, where players are dealt two hole cards and use five community cards to make the best five-card hand. Betting occurs in multiple rounds, and the goal is to either form the best hand or bluff opponents into folding.

Triple Draw Lowball
Triple Draw Lowball is a poker game where players aim to make the lowest possible hand, and each player can draw three times to improve their hand. The lowest possible hand is 5-4-3-2-A, with aces always being low, and no flushes or straights allowed.

Lesser Known More Obscure Versions Of Poker

Chicago
A stud-style poker game where the player with the highest hand wins half the pot, and the player with the highest spade in the deck (the "Chicago") wins the other half.

Follow the Queen
A variant of Seven-Card Stud where a queen dealt face-up has a special effect: any queen that appears on the board causes the following card dealt to become wild.

Guts
A high-risk, high-reward poker variation where players are dealt two cards, and everyone must decide to "play" or "fold" based on the strength of their hand. Players who fold contribute to the penalty pot.

Irish Poker
A mix between Omaha and Hold'em where players are initially dealt four hole cards, but only three are kept after the flop. The game combines aspects of both Omaha and Texas Hold'em strategies.

Leopard
A variation similar to Seven-Card Stud, where the dealer deals one face-up card after each round of betting. The key twist is that a "Leopard" (a hand containing all cards of the same suit) beats the typical poker hands.

Mississippi Stud
A community card game where players are dealt two hole cards, and five community cards are dealt face-up. Players can bet at any time and aim to create the best hand using their two hole cards and the community cards.

Red Dog
A simple poker variation where three cards are dealt, and players bet on whether the value of the third card will fall between the first two. The payout depends on the "spread" between the cards.

Seven-Card Stud Hi-Lo (8 or Better)
A split-pot variation of Seven-Card Stud where the pot is divided between the best high hand and the best low hand. The low hand must be 8 or lower.

Strip Poker
A casual and often lighthearted version of poker, where players must remove a piece of clothing when they lose a hand. The last player remaining fully clothed wins.

Swiss Poker
A variation where players are dealt two hole cards and a set of community cards. The twist is that the community cards change every hand, and players must adapt quickly to the shifting game state.

Wild Card Poker
A game where certain cards in the deck are designated as wild cards. These wild cards can represent any other card, making it easier to form stronger hands. The rules for which cards are wild can vary.

Zombie Poker
A fun and thematic variant where players receive cards in a traditional poker hand, but cards that are discarded become "zombified" and come back into play later in the round, potentially changing the outcome of the hand.

#note: These variations tend to be more obscure and can provide an interesting twist to standard poker games.

Below are the main rules for No-Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament Poker as seen on TV

๐ŸƒŽ 1. Tournament Structure

In tournament poker, players compete until one player wins all the chips. Players start with an equal amount of chips, and the tournament progresses in structured levels. The blinds increase after a set period, forcing action as playersโ€™ chip stacks decrease.

๐ŸƒŽ 2. Blinds and Antes

Blinds (small blind and big blind) are forced bets that rotate around the table. As the tournament progresses, blinds increase, encouraging players to play more aggressively. In some formats, antes are added in later levels to further increase the pot size and pressure on players.

๐ŸƒŽ 3. Elimination

When a player runs out of chips, they are eliminated from the tournament. The goal is to stay in the game as long as possible, with the ultimate prize being awarded to the last remaining player.

๐ŸƒŽ 4. Starting Hand Selection

Players should start with strong hands, especially in the early levels, as the blinds are low and there is more room to maneuver. As the tournament progresses and blinds rise, players must adapt to a more aggressive playing style and widen their hand range.

๐ŸƒŽ 5. Betting Rounds

Each hand has multiple betting rounds: pre-flop, post-flop, post-turn, and post-river. Players must decide whether to bet, check, raise, or fold during each round. The goal is to maximize your handโ€™s value and minimize losses when you have weaker hands.

๐ŸƒŽ 6. All-In and Side Pots

When a player goes all-in, they bet all their remaining chips. If multiple players are involved in the hand, side pots may be created for the players who have more chips than the all-in player. The all-in player can only win the main pot, while others compete for the side pots.

๐ŸƒŽ 7. Chip Counting

In tournament poker, your chip stack represents your tournament life. Players must manage their chips carefully, choosing when to be aggressive and when to conserve chips. Being low on chips is often called being "short-stacked," which requires more risk-taking.

๐ŸƒŽ 8. Positioning

The position of a player at the table is crucial. Players in later positions (closer to the dealer) have the advantage of seeing what others do before making their own decision. Early positions are more challenging as they have to act first and risk being outplayed by later positions.

๐ŸƒŽ 9. Payout Structure

Tournament payouts are structured so that the top finishers earn a percentage of the prize pool. The more players are eliminated, the larger the prize for the remaining players. The winner usually takes the largest share, with decreasing payouts for each position.

๐ŸƒŽ 10. Time Limits and Level Changes

Tournament poker follows a predetermined schedule for blinds and antes, which increase at regular intervals (typically every 15-20 minutes). This forces players to play more aggressively as the tournament progresses, and the overall time limit for a tournament may vary based on its structure.

๐ŸƒŽ 11. Behavior and Etiquette

Players are expected to act professionally. This includes not revealing information about their hand, avoiding slow play (taking too long to make decisions), and maintaining a respectful attitude towards opponents and officials. In tournament poker, proper etiquette is crucial for the flow of the game.

๐ŸƒŽ 12. Tiebreakers

In the rare case that two or more players have identical hands in a showdown, the pot is split. If there is a tie for position (such as during the final payout), the tournament rules will outline how ties are resolved, typically by chip counts or the best finishing position during the event.

These are the main rules you need to know for tournament poker, as seen on TV. Each rule helps structure the game and adds layers of strategy, making tournament poker an excellent watch even for no poker players.

Did Cowboys Really Play Poker?
โ—ข Yes, cowboys did indeed play poker! In fact, poker was one of the most favourite and popular card games in the American Old West, particularly among cowboys, miners, travellers, and frontier settlers. It became a common pastime for people during long, often monotonous, journeys and in the saloons of frontier towns. However, while we think of poker as a quintessential part of the Wild West, it wasn't the only game they played.

What games did cowboys play?
โ—ข Five-Card Draw: This was one of the most common poker variants played during the time. Itโ€™s a simple game where each player is dealt five cards, and after a round of betting, they can draw new cards to replace the ones they donโ€™t want. The goal is to make the best five-card hand.

โ—ข Seven-Card Stud: Another popular variant, which was played before the rise of Texas Hold'em. Each player is dealt seven cards (three face-down and four face-up) over several rounds, and they build their best five-card hand out of the seven cards.

โ—ข Stud Poker: This encompasses various other stud games, including games like Jack*pot, which could be based on betting structures or particular hand rankings.

โ—ข Other Card Games: Cowboys also played card games like Euchre, Cribbage, and Pinochle, though these weren't as universally popular as poker.

Were cowboys forerunners of the American frontier?
โ—ข Cowboys, often depicted as symbols of the American frontier, were indeed key figures in shaping the culture of the Old West. However, they were not the only players in the broader story of frontier expansion. While cowboys were known for cattle driving, working on ranches, and exploring remote territories, they were also part of a larger melting pot of settlers, miners, lawmen, and outlaws.

โ—ข The cowboys who played poker were often among the less "respectable" figures in society, particularly since gambling, drinking, and violence were associated with the saloons and rough towns of the time. Yet, they contributed significantly to the social life and culture of the frontier, where poker and other gambling activities were part of the daily fabric of life.

Conclusion
โ—ข In the midst of the rugged, often dangerous lifestyle of the American frontier, cowboys played poker as a way to pass the time, test their luck and sometimes make money. While they may not have been the only ones playing the game, they certainly helped solidify pokers place in the mythology of the Old West.
