Great Leighs Opening Confirmed - April 4 2008

Great Leighs Confirmed To Open April 4, 2008

Great Leighs AW Track will be opening on the 4th of April 2008, according to the BHB, 1 day before the Aintree Grand National. The first new racetrack to stage racing in Britain for 81 years.

More All Weather Racing Now?
Alot of punters dislike the all-weather racing, and are probably worried that the opening of Great Leighs will increase the amount of racing on artificial surfaces. Thie answer is the other AW tracks have been running in place of Great Leighs missed fixtures all season, so no, there will not be more AW racing fixtures. All that will happen is Leighs will take over a few penciled in venues like Southwell, Kempton and Lingfield.

Not So Grand Opening.
John Holmes, owner and promoter, said: "It has been a long, hard journey but naturally I am delighted at today's decision. I would like to thank the BHA for their encouragement, advice and support, which has been unflagging."

He added: "One must not expect a "grand opening" - this is a completely new destination where safety will take precedence.

"We see April 4 as a "soft opening" and if we can achieve the headline "Great Leighs goes off without a hitch" that will be a triumph. We have a further eight fixtures in April, upon which we can build.

"This will give both us and our operators - Arena Leisure plc, Sodexo Prestige and Stan James Bookmakers - a steer towards our two-day fixture on May 28-29, by which time our public grandstand and hospitality facilities will be fully operational."
