♠ A remote-controlled mechanism with a dozen launching tubes was found buried in the turf at Hong Kong's most famous horse racing track last week. It was rigged with compressed air to fire tiny, liquid-filled darts into the bellies of horses at the starting gate
The supervisor of Hong Kong's oldest racetrack Happy Valley noticed something hidden in the grass before racing commenced. He found a remote controlled mechanism covered by grass coloured tape and called in the bomb squad to examine and remove the device.
A 1 foot long trench was dug underneath the starting gates position, with foot long tubes placed in the trench and concealed directly under the stalls where each horse awaits the gates to open before the off.
Gladly, the sharp eyed track supervisor found the device before any horses or jockeys were endangered in running.
♠ A reward of $128,000 has been put up for information leading to the conviction of the offenders. In the meantime, security guards with dogs now patrol the Happy Valley racetrack during closing hours.
